Ontologies are currently a very active area of research within the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
BrainFrame will use several custom built ontologies to achieve its overall vision.
The following ontologies are under development using Protege:
1. An ontology of neuroanatomy. URL for use in OWLSight: ttp://www.nervouscreation.com/documents/ontologies/BrainFramev2.rdf-xml.owl
2. An ontology of terms for describing the wide variety of techniques of data acquisition in the neurosciences.
3. An ontology of terms for describing the relative credibility of the various sources of information that will be references by BrainFrame (e.g., peer reviewed, etc.).
4. A simple ontology of terms for describing the level of analysis at which the user is currently operating. The assumption is that some of these will overlap extensively. These are the frames in the BrainFrame system. URL for use in OWLSight: http://www.nervouscreation.com/brainframe/Ontologies/LevelsOfAnalysisv4....
5. An ontology of organisms that have been studied in psychology and neuroscience. URL for use in OWLSight: http://www.nervouscreation.com/brainframe/Ontologies/Levels/Organismv2.o...
6. An ontology of physiological systems. URL for use in OWLSight: http://www.nervouscreation.com/brainframe/Ontologies/Levels/Systemv1.owl
More ontologies will inevitably be added as the project develops further.
Rather than looking at the XML representation, you might want to access these ontologies by using the web-based browser OWLSight. You will simply need to cut and paste the url for one of the above ontologies into the loading interface for the browser.
